With the project Favn, Arkitekturfabrikken + Kata Palicz became one of three winners in the open planning and design competition for the new viking era museum on Bygdøy in Oslo. The proposal embraces both the ships and the surrounding landscape through a clear architectural concept that responds directly to Arneberg’s original building.
The new building volume is deliberately subordinate to the existing architecture, adopting the originals formal language of wings and pitched roofs. The north-western placement ensures that Arneberg’s building is largely unchanged when viewed from the site entrance. Large parts of the programme are located below ground level at the present main entrance, limiting the perceived mass of the new construction above ground.
