The beautiful historic town hall in Bakklandet, Trondheim has been given new life through a transformation that introduces new functions and a renewed role within the neighbourhood. Through close collaboration with the client and future users, the building was carefully rehabilitated to accommodate offices, housing and a centre for design.
The distinctive character of the former “church hall” has been preserved, allowing the building’s history to remain a clear and defining element of the interior. Through sensitive interventions to the façade and a holistic approach to materiality, the historic expression has been safeguarded, while the neighbourhood building has been given a more open and outward-facing relationship with its surroundings.
